Meredith awoke the next morning, ready for a good day. She would meet Komatsuna again today in the dojo. But that would be in the evening, for now she needed to pass the time. She walked into the city, just to look around some more. It was a very interesting place, so much more different from her home back on Earth. She walked through the buildings, and saw a noodle shop with a sign saying "now hiring." 'That could be good,' she thought, 'I definitely need to start working on getting some more money.' She walked in, and saw that the place was packed. She kind of pushed, but very gently, towards the back of the shop, so she could talk to an employee.
"Excuse me," she said, "but I saw a sign on the outside that said 'now hiring?'"
The noodle shop worker nodded his head, and jerked his thumb back, indicating that she should walk to the back to see some one. She went back there, and looked at the kitchen. She'd cooked before, lots of times. She was a very competent cook, her Earth mom had taught her everything she knew. The employee pointed to a fat man cooking some noodles in a wok, and went back to the counter. Meredith walked over to him.
"Um, excuse me, but, are you hiring?" The fat man stopped what he was doing, looked Meredith up and down, grunted, nodded, and went back to working. Meredith wasn't sure what this meant. "Is that a yes?" The man nodded, continuing his work. Meredith didn't know what to do, so she continued asking questions. "Should I start working now?" He shook his head. Meredith stuttered. "Would, would you like me to start tomorrow?" Nod. "Al-alright, I'll be here tomorrow morning." Nod. Meredith left, still not entirely sure what just happened.
On her way back to her pod, Meredith saw something odd. There appeared to be a person waiting by her pod. She thought it might be Komatsuna. But when she got closer, she realised that it wasn't, and that it was actually somebody rummaging around in her stuff. "Hey! Stop!" she shouted, running to catch up. The thief turned, and didn't really seem to care, kept rummaging. As Meredith approached her pod, two more thieves jumped out of the bushes, with sticks, surprising her. The first one brought the stick around in an arc, while the second stepped to the left. Meredith, caught by surprise, only had time to move sideways, and get hit on her shoulder. She quickly rebounded, throwing a punch at the first thief's stomach. It made contact, and he doubled over. The second thief was already behind Meredith, and swung the stick at her, hitting her back. She cried out in pain, and did a spin kick directed at where she hoped his groin would be. This thief was a slightly more competent fighter, and was able to side step, and punch her other shoulder as Meredith turned around. Aching, Meredith turned to the second thief, and started throwing lightning fast punches at him. He either dodged or blocked most of them. He was just luring her away from the first thief, so he could get around her back. He punched Meredith in the kidneys, and she cried out again in pain. This time, she stepped sideways, so both thieves were in front of her. They advanced, and Meredith took up a defensive stance. The brigand on the left feigned an attack and Meredith went for it, getting hit by the other thief. She tried to throw a punch at the one on the right, but they were merely glancing blows. Meredith was losing this fight, and it was all she could do to keep up with the blows the advancing thieves were throwing at her. Suddenly she just couldn't take it anymore. She crawled into fetal position, and lay there, taking the blows. The brigands said nothing as they kept hitting her.
Meredith was getting very angry, and very upset. She started to call on her ki energy, forcing her anger out. She knew what was probably going to happen, and wasn't at all afraid of it. This is what she wanted wasn't it? To use her anger to get more powerful? Again, a part of her mind in the back was screaming that this wasn't right, but she was getting better at pushing it back and locking it away. The blows kept coming, the thieves unaware of Meredith's charging. Suddenly she stood up, full of a new energy. The men paused briefly. The second one aimed a blow at Meredith, who caught the stick, snapping it in her hand. She sent a ki blast at the other one, hitting his hand, making him dropping it. "You done goofed" she said. "Wah?" was the only reply from one of the men. The kaioken tripled her power, and she was throwing punches at the thieves faster now. They couldn't keep up, getting hit by most of them. She did a quick turn, and punched hard at the nose of the second one. He crumpled to the ground, holding his face. She turned to the first one, who was shaking. She held up her hand, and let fly a round of ki blasts, each hitting him in the chest. Leaving his body on the ground, not caring whether he was dead or not, Meredith turned to the one who had been messing in her pod. He had been putting the stuff back hurriedly, not wanting to be a part of this. Meredith feigned a punch at him, and he ran.
Meredith didn't take kindly to thieves. They had never been tolerated back on earth. She would have to find a new place to hide her pod.
