When Meredith was 25 earth years old, her brother Jeremy was 28. This is the age that all Redthew kids moved out, to go start their lives on their own. It was a big event, but with little celebration, and hardly a 'hurrah'. Instead it was filled with much crying and grief. The day that Jeremy left went like this.
Meredith was going about her day as normal. It was a Tuesday, and so was her day to work on the flower garden. After pulling out weeds, watering the flowers, and just tending the garden bed in general, it was nearly noon, which was the time that Meredith and Jeremy tended to spar for training. She decided to head up there early.
Upon reaching the entrance to the dojo, She took off her foot pads, stepped to the doors, and did the Redthew traditional bow: left hand facing the right, palm flat, right hand in a fist pressed against the left hand. She entered, put on one of the family's sets of medium-weighted training clothes, and began to practice forms until her brother arrived.
When Jeremy arrived, he removed his footpads, and also bowed at the door. Seeing his sister inside already warming up, he greeted her. "Good evening sister. I hope I find you well?" Without even a pause in her form, Meredith replied, "Indeed you do. And I hope that I find my big brother to be well?" Jeremy ripped off his shirt, flexed his muscles, and sparkled."Well as always. Shall we get to sparring?" The brother and sister duo walked to the center of the room, standing opposite from each other. Simultaneously, they bowed, then both set up offensive stances. Meredith was the first to strike, making a quick jab towards Jeremy's head. Jeremy dodged it with a crouch, bringing his foot around in a sweep, hoping to knock Meredith down. Meredith did a light backwards sumersault, and sent five lightly powered Ki blasts speeding at her brother. Jeremy dodged all of them, then sent a quick low-powered kamehameha towards Meredith, who sidestepped just in time.
"Brother, how did you do that? Will you teach me please?" "Only if you can beat me in this sparring match," Jeremy jested. He ran towards Meredith, who had set up a defensive stance, and pulled his arm back for a punch. Releasing it, the punch came right at Meredith's stomach. Meredith was waithing for this, and grabbed Jeremy's arm, flipping him over onto his stomach.Bracing his arms with her knees, and sitting on his chest. "Say Uncle," she jested. "Uncle!" Satisfied, Meredith got off of her brother. "Very good Meredith," said a voice coming from the doors of the dojo. Meredith turned to the front of the dojo, bowing. Jeremy also got up and bowed.
Their father walked in. He was taller than Jeremy, bigger and buffer too. It was he who had taught Jeremy and Meredith all that they knew. "Jeremy, if my old ears did not deceive me, you owe your little sister a lesson." "Yes, father, I'll get right on-" "No, not right now. later will be fine." Alfred, their father, turned to Meredith. "You've really improved your techniques. You may be ready to participate in a tournament." "Yes, father, thank you father." Meredith's voice was soft again.
Alfred turned back to Jeremy. "Jeremy, you are of the age where most Redthew men leave their families to go make their own. It is time for you to move out." He reached into his pocket, and pulled out 200 zeni. "It's not much, but it is something to start you off with." He turned his face to Jeremy's, almost tears at his eyes. His voice now quieter, not the booming, loud, boisterous voice it normally was, he told Jeremy "it is now time for you to take the family cestus'. These have been passed down from Redthew father, to Redthew son, for generations. There is no ceremony to go with it, but I feel that the honor of obtaining them is enough."
Alfred walked to the glass case display containing the Cestus', opened it, and returned to Jeremy, hand them to him. "Take these, and may they aid you well." "It is an honor, father, I-" Once again Jeremy's dad cut him off in mid sentence. "Don't talk, son. It is tradition for you to leave with little said as possible."
Tears were streaming down both of their faces. "Your mother packed your things, take them from her when you leave." Jeremy took the cestus', and turned to leave. At the dojo door, he turned around, opened his mouth as if to say something, thought better of it. He turned back around, felt someone embrace around his middle, and two wet, warm patches against his back. Meredith had embraced Jeremy around the middle, pressed against his back. He patted her hands, and when she let go, he left. Tears streamed down Meredith's face as she watched her brother leave, go by the gates of the home, embrace their mother, take his things, and leave.
"Come on, sweetie, lets get you back to the house." Alfred put his arm around Meredith's shoulder, and they walked back to the house. Meredith went straight to her room, and stayed in there for days, only opening the door for her mom to bring in food, or to go use the restroom.
A month passed before Meredith finally came back out of her room. It was another Tuesday, so she went about her usualy Tuesday business. She went to the kitchen, to find her mom wasn't there. On the table was a note, reading "Gone to town with your dad to do some shopping and get some stuff. Theres eggs in the refridgerator, and orange juice too, if you're feeling up to eating." Meredith wondered how her mom had known she would come out of her room today. She walked over to the refridgerator, and saw in the trash can next to it a bunch of pieces of paper. She read them, and read the notes her mom had left her, in hopes she would come out. Meredith sighed, and opened up the refridgerator, and made her breakfast.
After eating, Meredith went to the flower garden, only to find someone had already done if for her. She sat down on a bench, and just looked at the flowers. Eventually, she decided to head to the family dojo.
At the entrance, she took her footpads off and bowed. she entered, and there was a practice dummy in the middle of the room. She gave it a tentative touch, a light punch, a slightly harder kick, then a really hard punch-kick. She started wailing on it, letting all of her stress and anger out. Punch, Kick, Punch Punch Kick, Jab, Cross, she kept hitting it as hard as she could, letting everything out. "Kaioken!" she shouted, and began punching harder and faster. This lasted for 15 minutes, before she finally calmed down, panting. She looked at the dummy. It was probably not going to be of much use anymore, after taking all of those hits. "RAAAH!" She screamed, punching it as hard as she could one more time. It broke off, and flew against the wall.
3 years passed. Meredith was now 28, and had gone without anymore outbursts. She hadn't said much in those 3 years, least of all about her brother. Her mom would occassionally receive letters from Jeremy, and Meredith would read them. He apparently was doing very well, and missed the family alot.
Meredith went outside, and heard noises coming from outside the gate. She went to investigate, following the sound of the noises. They seemed to lead to a patch of overgrowth. She quietly pushed through, and found her dad on the other side, messing with something round, and big.
"Father?" Alfred jumped, and turned around guiltily. "Why, Meredith, er, what are you?" his voice trailed of. "Father, is that a...a Saiyan space pod?" "What, this old thing? No, its...well, I mean..." Alfred sighed. "Meredith, why don't you come back with me to the house. Theres something I need to tell you."
Alfred explained to Meredith everything, from the moment she had arrived in her pod, to why she looked different, to how, even though she was of a slighter build, she was still just as strong as the rest of them. Meredith sat in silence, as her father finished up. "So you knew?" Alfred looked guiltily at his wife, who didn't say anything. "You knew, you both knew, and you didn't tell me. This whole time, I thought I was a, a, a mutant freak show, some sort of human with a, with a tail, a mutant, and now you tell me I'm, I'm, an alien!! A monkey freaking alien, not even part of the family!" "Meredith, there's no need to get upset, we thought it was for the best, we did it for you, and-" "NO!!" Meredith was white with rage now. "I've had enough of being silent. All my life, people skirting around me, me dealing with it, being quiet! I've had enough of this! I'm going back to..back to my REAL home with my REAL parents!!" She stormed out of the house "WHO ARE PROBABLY DEAD!" She screamed through the door.
She ran, ran as fast as she could, back to the space pod. She knew how to use most pods, and smaller space vessels, fairly well. She'd spent a whole year when she was 15 learning everything she could. She put in the coordinates for what she hoped she remembered as planet Vegeta. She was going to find her parents. She was going to. She didn't know what she would do after that, though. What if they were dead? Would her earth parents let her back into their home? Maybe she'd gone too far...but what was done was done, and now she was off to planet Vegeta, prepared to do anything to find her parents.
