"Good. Now, again!" said the wise martial arts instructor.
"Yes, master Sohen!" exclaimed Kris eagerly.
Kris is now 15 years of age, and is preparing himself for the Central City Junior Martial Arts Championship. At his age, this is the last year he will be allowed to compete in the tournament. He had entered the tournament the past three years, but never made it past the semi-final round. After losing the previous tournament, he began learning a new techinique developed with help from his master, Sohen.
"Haaaaaaaaahhhh...!" Yelled Kris as a light blue aura glowed around him. He began focusing his ki to launch the attack again. After a few seconds of preperation, he lept towards a nearby tree, using his Bukujutsu to propel him through the air. He then delivered a firm kick to the tree, causing it to shake. As it shook, the tree's leaves started to fall. This was Kris' cue to start the attack. He lept off of the tree, spinning 180 degrees and focusing his ki to his leg. As soon as he was within range of the falling leaves, he began furiously kicking at them with one leg. The technique was called "Flash Kick". It used Bukujutsu to propel one's leg back and forth at incredible speed, allowing one to deliver a devestating barrage of one-legged kicks.
"Yayayayayayaya-!!" Kris yelled furiously as he kicked with blinding speed at the leaves slowly falling around him. Each kick to a leaf would rip it into smaller pieces, which he would then kick to create smaller shreds. He would kick each leaf until there was nothing left but tiny fragments that would fall to the ground. This training also trained the user's reflexes. After all, it's hard to aim when you're kicking at over 20 kicks per second. The only downside to this technique is the strain it puts on one's leg. It's meant to be a one-time use technique that would wear down the opponent's defenses and give the user a huge advantage.
After about 5 seconds of kicking wildly in mid-air, Kris slowly relaxed, letting his leg hang free as he slowly descended to the ground. He landed on the cool grass, his feet surround by small piles of disintigrated bits of leaf. He then looked up at his master, who was observing from nearby, with a satisfied grin. Sohen looked back at him, a proud look on his face.
"Very good, Kris. You have grown quite strong over the last few months."
"Thank you master! Do you think I'm ready for the tournament this weekend?"
"Not quite. You still need a bit more practice with the Flash Kick."
"Of course, master!"
Kris looked at his master, beaming with pride.
"Master, you remember our deal, right? You said you said that if I won the Championship, you would teach me a new technique!"
Indeed. And what a useful technique it is. Developed and perfected by me, the Kiaiho Sutoraiki. But enough of that, show me the Flash Kick again!"
"Yes, master!"
Kris continued to practice his technique until sundown. After the training, he couldn't even walk because of the intense pain in his legs. He had to use Bukujutsu to hover home, dangling his legs as he slowly glided through the air.
"I think you're ready for the tournament. You've mastered the Flash Kick technique, and your legs should have just enough time to rest before the Championship this weekend. I know you'll do great!
Kris looked to the sky, determined to win the tournament so he can learn a new technique. We would do anything to get stronger, so he could one day avenge his parents.
~~~~~~~~~~
There Kris stood, his ears sore from the constant cheering of the crowd, the hot sun beating down on his dark hair. He looked around at the fighting arena on which he was standing. It was a familiar sight, and he was always eager to see the other contestants standing beside him.
The day had finally arrived. This is what Kris had been training for all year long: His last chance to claim the Central City Junior Martial Arts Championship trophy. He passed the preliminaries with flying colors, just as he had done his previous years competing. The rules were quite simple: The first person to fall out of the ring, give up or lose consiousness would be eliminated. Excessive force is not allowed. He stood in the arena with the other contestants as the crowd got a chance to observe them and cheer them on. Soon, the first match would be announced.
"Remember, don't rely on your Flash Kick. It's a powerful attack, but must be used with caution."
Sohen's words echoed through Kris' head as a large monitor turned on behind the competitors. They turned around to see the order of matches. The monitor played some music as it replayed videos of past matches. The crowd cheered and eagerly awaited for the fighting to start. Then, the tournament board appeared. Kris was in the first match against someone named "Kenny".
The other fighters cleared out of the arena as Kris waited at one end of the ring. He calmy cleared his mind of distraction, as he was taught to do before an official match. "Let the first match of the Central City Junior Martial Arts Championship begin!!" yelled the announcer, the crowd going wild as the match was underway. Kris looked at his opponent, who had his guard up and was walking towards him. Kenny seemed to be very large and burly compared to Kris' slender, highly trained body.
"Haha! Come on, wimp, are you scared?" Kenny mocked Kris.
Kris then entered his fighting stance. A rather basic-looking stance with the arms stretched out slightly forward with very loose fists. He kept his body light and loose, which allowed faster reaction time. Kris wasn't affected by Kenny's insults, as he slowly inched his way forward. Kenny decided to attack, running forward with a loud yell. Kris focused his mind on Kenny's movements, trying to read his attack as he made it. Kenny attempted a wild, right-handed haymaker punch. This was simple enough to counter. Kris easily slid under the punch, appearing at Kenny's right side behind his arm. With one swift movement, Kris delivered a sweep kick to the back of Kenny's legs, tripping him so that he was facing upwards. As Kenny hung in the air for a split second, Kris followed up with a firm downward elbow to the stomach. After succesfully landing the blow, Kris retreated a few steps back. Kenny lie on the ground, the wind knocked completely out of him. After a few seconds of panting, Kenny managed to pick himself up. He then lept at Kris, this time attempting to grab him. Kris promptly took Kenny by the armpits, rolled onto his back and used the momentum to kick his opponent high into the air, only to land outside the ring with a "thud". "And that's the match, ladies and gentleman! The first round goes to Kris!" The crowd cheered in response.
Kris glanced at the sidelines. He noticed his master nodding in approval. He smiled back. The first few rounds were always easy, as Kris contained quite a bit more strength and speed than most of the other contestants. There are usually, however, a few good fighters that Kris would have to fight towards the end.
Kris won his next two matches with little challenge, and soon he was in the final round. This was it, the final obstacle. The only thing that stood between him and the Championship trophy was 15 year old Trevor. Trevor was in the same situation as Kris: This was his last chance to emerge victorious. The combatants entered their fighting stances and the match had begun!
Trevor started offensively as he charged Kris with surprising speed. Kris was caught slightly off guard by a straight punch, but soon recovered without taking a hit. Kris was stuck on the defensive as Trevor threw many quick, precise punches. Kris blocked and evaded the punches, but couldn't find an opening in Trevor's attack. Then Trevor wound up for a powerful roundhouse kick. Kris noticed the incoming kick and ducked just in time to evade it. Trevor used the momentum of the kick to continue spinning him around until he faced Kris, just in time to start defending against Kris' follow-up punches. Trevor was now being backed into a corner by Kris' flurry of quick jabs. With impressive reflex and timing, Trevor managed to grab one of Kris' fists in his hand, then held him still as he delivered a powerful punch to Kris' stomach. Trevor used the time that Kris was stunned to launch a knee to Kris' lower jaw. Kris flew back several feet from the impact and landed on his rear. He staggered up slowly, his chin bruised from Trevor's attack. The battle continued with both fighters trading off blows. Kris was in trouble, however, as he was gradually taking more damage than Trevor. As he got more injured, his movements slowed down, giving Trevor more of an advantage. Eventually, Kris decided there was no other option. He readied himself for one final charge, and determined that the next attack that landed would decide the match. He charged at Trevor swiftly, using Bukujutsu to propel himself faster. Time seemed to move in slow motion around Kris as he anticipated Trevor's counter-attack. Finally, Trevor tried to throw an uppercut at Kris' face. Kris used his ki to shift his trajectory, sliding to the side of Trevor. He noticed a blind spot in his defence and launched the attack. First, he delivered a sharp kick to the soft tissue beneath Trevor's rib cage. Trevor reeled back in pain, which was Kris' cue to use the Flash Kick. He delivered a rising kick to the jaw to send Trevor up into the air. Kris then focused the ki to his leg and yelled.
"Hiyayayayayayayayaaaa-!!"
He unleashed his wild flurry of kicks, targeting Trevor's stomach, chest and face. The kicks only lasted for three seconds, which was more than enough time to cause signifigant damage to Trevor's body. Kris then relaxed, his leg burning in pain. Trevor fell to the ground, bruised and unconsious, with a few bones most likely broken. Kris lowered to the ground slowly, not moving his leg. The referee hopped into the ring and examined Trevor for a moment. "Trevor has been knocked unconsious! Kris is the winner!"
It took Kris a few seconds to relize what the referee just said. He did it. He couldn't believe the sight he was beholding as the crowd cheered wildly. Soon afterwards, the trophy was presented to Kris. Trevor limped over to Kris during the celebration.
"Hey... You did good, Kris."
"Ohh... Thank you, Trevor. It was on honor to fight with you."
The two fighters shook hands, and the crowd cheered them both on. Kris couldn't help but shed a tear as he finally accomplished his goal. Now came his next goal: To learn Sohen's special technique and become stronger, hoping to one day avenge his parents.
One week later...
"Master Sohen, I'm ready to learn the technique!" Said Kris, eager to advance in his training.
"Very well. We shall soon begin stage one of learning the Kiaiho Sutoraiki. Be warned, however, it is a difficult move to learn, and will take a long time to fully master it. Are you ready?"
"... Yes master." Kris said, after a brief moment of thought.
"Haha... Then let's get started."
~~~~~~~~~~
It has now been over a year since Kris' Championship match. Kris is now 16 years of age, and is still learning the beginning stages of the Kiaiho Sutoraiki. What is in store for Kris as he continues his training? What is this powerful new technique? Find out as Kris continues his training.
