Komatsuna left to the call of “Find out who that guy is,” running. He was bound and determined to find out exactly who he is, if its even a he. Komatsuna saw the robe swish around a corner, and followed suit. Another corner, and another, through a passageway. Komatsuna was keeping up with him, catching up. Suddenly, he threw boxes in Komatsuna's way, but Komatsuna quickly jumped over them. This caused the figure to get slightly farther ahead, so Komatsuna pushed harder to catch up.
Komatsuna followed the robe around another corner, and there were people in this alley. Komatsuna pushed through to cries of “Hey!” and “Watch it, punk!” but ignored them, running as if his life depended on it, although for all he knew, it could very well. His breathing was still steady, but he wasn't sure for how much longer. Legs pumping, like iron pistons in a train, he continued to run (if Komatsuna knew about Forrest Gump, he might have been able to express his running related to the film).
Komatsuna turned another corner, and a wall. He slammed to a stop, only figuratively speaking, and, without much of a thought, quickly used his bukujutsu to fly over the wall, and kept low to ensure sight on the robed figure. He saw it again turn another corner, but this time, it had him a way back, near the beginning of the alley. Komatsuna quickly sped between the buildings, turning a corner, only to see the robe disappear again. He pushed his speed a little more, and started pumping his legs. This way, as he landed, he was already at a run.
The breaths were coming harder now, legs burning, chest burning, lungs starting to heave. But Komatsuna had to catch this man, for the sake of the woman and the young boy he had just saved. Komatsuna could feel the bone pushing the muscles, the tendons tensing. His legs were growing weary, but he had to keep going, he must. Turning corners, knocking away boxes, he was barely keeping up with this unknown stranger, each time he turned a corner, so did the stranger.
Komatsuna kept pushing. He thought of Serori, and knew that he had to accomplish his mission. If he kept failing, he would never get stronger, Serori would never have feelings for him. He pushed harder, ignoring the screaming coming from his legs, ignoring the burning pain as his breaths became shallow. He had to catch him. He forced his legs to move faster, and suddenly he found the synchronization. Every person has that certain special way they run, where it takes next to no stamina, theres no pain in your legs, you feel like you can run forever. Komatsuna had found his, and he sped up, starting to catch up to the mysterious person.
The run had taken them through a good portion of Satan City. Komatsuna was definitely beginning to tire, but the robed figure looked hardly even phased. Komatsuna pushed past some more civilians, starting to catch up. He reached out his fingers...and ran past the turn the man had gone through. He stopped again, turned, and could barely even see the passage the robed figure had disappeared around. He quickly activated his bukujutsu again, and flew above the alley. Once he found the running figure, he decided he would continue his chase in the air.
Being in the air was much faster, and easier, less painful, than trying to keep up on foot. Komatsuna just hadn't wanted to waste his ki flying, in case he got in a fight once he caught this person. He followed him, but not easily. It was almost as if the figure was taking all the turns that would mess up someone trying to follow in the air. But Komatsuna persevered, and kept following him. Left turn, right turn, forward, right turn, left, right, right, right. Komatsuna realised what had made the chase seem so long, and so hard. The figure was taking him around in circles, although how he had enough stamina to just keep running was anyone's guess, as Komatsuna had no idea. He must be really powerful.
The twists and turns were making Komatsuna's head spin, so he quickly landed. He had chosen a spot in front of the running figure, and was facing towards him.
“Stop! I need to talk to you.” Komatsuna said, but the figure jumped, slightly startled, and turned the other way. Komatsuna kept running after him, with a shout of “Stop!” The chase continued.
After so many turns, and it had been a lot, but Komatsuna still kept on his trail, the figure jumped on some boxes, and took it to the roofs. Now, this was more like it. A rooftop chase? This oughta be fun. Komatsuna jumped onto the roofs and continued chasing after him. The running, the jumping, all of this didn't bother Komatsuna, who's adrenaline started rushing the second his foot touched roof. Sure, he was tired, but the mysterious man had just made it fun.
There were no boxes the figure could throw at him, no people to push past. It was just straight, jumping to a different roof if the one in front was too tall, or too far away. Komatsuna would try some of the longer jumps. The feel of being in the air for that long was pure adrenaline. He would use these to run in front of the figure, try to stop him, but he always kept running, a different direction. And the taller buildings Komatsuna just used a little bit of bukujutsu to help get over. The fog, however, was not helping him to see.
Komatsuna got on a roof beside the running man, and ran, keeping pace with him. He turned, and Komatsuna jumped to the next roof. He got to the end of the next one, and saw the man stumble to a stop. In the fog, he hadn't seen that this roof had nowhere he could go to. He turned, facing Komatsuna, who was gently advancing on him.
“You have nothing to worry about. I just need to ask you some questions. I'm not trying to hurt you.”
The man looked at him. Then, holding out both his arms from his body, he fell back. The sun glinted off of him, in a strange way. It happened almost as if in slow motion. The man just fell back, didn't try to catch himself. It was strangely uncanny, and when Komatsuna gave a shout of surprise and ran to the edge, he couldn't see him. He jumped down into the clearing, and saw no sign of him.
What the hell just happened? Komatsuna thought.
