Dangerous currents were building, swirling into unpredictable eddies and the propensity for those to resort to violence when they couldn’t have what they wanted was building to an alarming level. So much so had this trend towards irrational action elevated that Zach, not usually the picture of rationality himself had taken note of it. If Earth was going to be kept safe while the barbarians slaughtered each other, then he would have to be better prepared to annihilate them when and if he ever encountered them. To that end, the blonde Master put his teaching duties aside for the day and headed to his private training garden.
The goal of today’s experimentation would be to devise a suitable countermeasure to people’s tendency to throw mindless punches, kicks and assorted other limbs in a vain attempt to hit his already well guarded head. If a proper deterrent could be developed then that would free Zach’s arms up for full time offensive action without having to worry about guarding himself. Of course, as usual his middle would be left open as it was the true test of a man to pit his core against his opponent’s strength.
The logical course would of course be to extend the protective range of his body armor, carefully though to ensure that the helmet connects with his shoulders and chest plate rather then his head. By connecting bellow the neck, the helmet would be made immobile relative to Zach’s body and thus insulate his head from any impact that might land. The translucent nature of his shield would also enable the young man to look in any direction without the need to make the helmet movable, greatly increasing it’s usefulness. Then lastly there was the actual countermeasure that would ultimately deter those mindless attempts of striking the head. The helmet, much like his Cone Buster, would be covered in sharp, conical protruvances that doubtless mutilate a striking fist or leg. The effect was much the same as coving one’s clothing in spikes, not unlike the old military helmets used in ancient trench warfare. This arrangement though would have multiple spikes, arrayed all about the helmet to create a porcupine effect.
Taking a relaxed position in the middle of the garden, Zach focused his energy, first forming his protective body armor as a starting point. It made sense that he should integrate the helmet with the body armor, but also keep it’s execution separate. In this way if he only needed the armor, or the helmet individually, he could call upon one, or the other without wasting energy on both. Both though could be used and indeed this was the intended arrangement, however by keeping the techniques individually apart, he could thence use them individually.
Next, picturing his body and the flow of energy within, Zach molded a shell of it around his head, first forming an amorphous globule and then slowly shaping it to form more of a bell shape so that it could properly interface with his shoulders and chest plate. The work was tedious and Zach tried a few times, scrapping and starting over, scrapping and starting over, until finally he had the general shape developed. When he’d originally developed his body armor it took nearly two years of practice to get it right so the pace of the development of a stationary helmet was both considerably faster then the original armor but still slow and given the teen’s level of experience with the energy molding, something his patience could well tolerate. Indeed, the development of these specialized shields was in some manner enjoyable, he recalled that the Cone Buster, because of it’s convoluted shape was a particular challenge, but after it’s initial development and countless hours of practice, the buster was as easy to summon now as his body armor. Eventually the helmet with it’s porcupine exterior would be just as easy to summon, but for the moment Zach was still just developing the shape.
That shape turned out to be a wide bell, melding into the contours of Zach’s muscled shoulders. The blonde made sure after he had the general shape to go through a full range of motions and stretches involving his shoulders to ensure the helmet could cope with any conceivable motion his arms might have to make during the course of battle. Once satisfied, the more difficult part came, adding to the protective bubble, a savage array of inch long, insanely sharp spikes. The high ‘Sharpness’ or acutance of the spikes was made possible by the fact that they were composed of energy rather then matter. While energy could be made infinitely sharp but shrinking the tip’s dimensions to the absurdly minute, matter could never attain such sharpness and thus the myth of the monofilament weapon remains just that, a myth. The same principal applies to the Cone Buster, giving it it’s ability to cut small energy beams and blasts and then redirect them without accidentally detonating them. Arguably Zach could use the buster it’s self as some form of impromptu stabbing weapon, but the teen abhorred the use of weapons in combat and would likely never resort to such a base level.
The task wasn’t easy and required an initial investment of great concentration. As one row of spikes formed, others blunted, deformed or vanished all together. Zach worked through the better part of the morning to get the spikes to array themselves properly until finally he had a completed helmet. His vision was surprisingly clear given the number of pointy protruvances projecting from the protective armor.
With this task done, next came the process of turning this first time work of energy molding art into a repeatable product. Dismissing the helmet, Zach took a few breaths and summoned up his energy once more. Recalling the image of the helmet, Zach channeled the gathered energy and after a few moments of intense concentration, the image took form once more. The details were exactly the same as before, the bell shape molded to his shoulders and chest plate, the rows of inch long spikes of impossible sharpness and the appropriate translucent color. The execution was still to sluggish for use in combat but at least now Zach knew he could replicate the protective headpiece when he wanted. Dismissing the helmet once more, Zach built up another charge and repeated the process, summoning the spiked helmet. Over and over again the blonde dismissed and summoned the headpiece, working through the afternoon until finally he was satisfied he could bring it up fast enough to be useful. Hunger also had a hand in his decision that the Helm of Justice as he was naming it was ready. He’d worked strait through lunch and now it was almost time for dinner. Tired from the day’s exertions, made somewhat more strenuous by the teen’s ever present training weights, Zach retired back to the school to rest, contented that his new technique was ready for actual use.
{Applying for power level increase. My training weights are in effect. Acquiring new technique: Helm of Justice.}
