Ark had never really held down a job, even when he had reached twenty there was nothing that really kept his attention. His father Owen had spent most of his life working, but had taken joy in such a life, enjoying working with his hands. Ark was on the other end of the spectrum. True he loved to train and condition his body which could also be considered a form of work, but that to him was relaxing, it helped him focus. Still in his years that did not mean he never earned any zeni for himself. On more than one occasion he had helped out friends and acquaintances in return for payment, but the monetary reward was never the drive behind his assistance.
This morning had turned out to be one such day. Early in the morning Ark was out stretching, getting ready to go for a morning jog when Master Diki and another would approach him. The other man was no unfamiliar to Ark, he was a farmer that lived a bit of a ways down the road, Jordan Welche to call him by name. He was an older gentleman, having a slight hunch to his back, yet there was fire in his eyes, fire that allowed him to wake everyday and take care of his farm along with his sons. Nodding slightly Ark would move over to great them, putting his morning routine on hold for now.
“Good Morning Ark, Mr. Welche has come asking for assistance, and I figured you would be fit to give him a hand. It seems the storm last night knocked down his chicken coop and the little things need to be rounded up. Would you mind helping? The two of us just aren’t as quick as we used to be.”
Ark would be surprised at the request, but couldn’t help smile some. ”Of course, lead the way and I will gather up the little birds for you…chickens are birds right?” The old farmer would smile and turn, leading Ark of towards his property. Glancing back over his shoulder he couldn’t help but smirk a little at Master Diki as he watches the two of them go. It was almost as if the old man thought he was going to struggle with this.
Walking for a while Ark would stuff his hands into his pockets, whistling some as he walks behind the old farmer, the young human never in a real rush to do anything. Making it all the way back to the Welche Farm, Jordan would point out the chicken coop, one of the fences that surrounds the coop wired up awkwardly, the temporary repairs enclosing the area once more. Walking around the yard and pecking at the ground were over a dozen chickens, all of them seeming quite content with their new found freedom.
”All I need you to do is catch them all and return them to the coop, and like I said I can pay you for your services, I cannot have these chickens running off on me. What would I eat for breakfast without any eggs!” With the exclamation the old man would turn to leave, trusting the younger man to catch the creatures.
Casually he would walk up to the closest one, watching as it looks at him with its head cocked slightly to the side before scampering away. Again he would move towards the chicken, reaching down for it as it flaps its wings and jumps away from him. The commotion would start to startle the other ones, the feathery critters spreading out even more. Standing up straight he would look around at them, surprised at their quickness. Looking at the one in front of him for a moment he would suddenly lunge to the side, trying to grab a hold of one off to his left. This one too would flap its wings and jump away from him, Ark landing roughly on his stomach in the dirt. Coughing some he again rises to his feet, dusting himself off some.
Rolling his neck some an idea would come to his head. There was technique he had been working on and although he had not really used it in any fight so far it might benefit him to try it here. Running towards one of the chickens he would bend over and grab for it, the bird of course flapping and jumping away. The difference would be that the bent over Ark had frozen in place as the chicken jumped and the real Ark was on the other side of it. Holding the flapping piece of livestock in his hand he would walk over to the cage and chuck it into the coop. Zenzoken was a technique meant for fighting, but it was also good for catching chickens. With this strategy Ark would make short work of the chickens, catching them one at a time, putting each of them into the coop in turn.
When he was finally done he would dust his hands off, satisfied with his work and it had actually turned out to be a bit more training for him. All in all it was a fun little exercise. Turning he would head back towards the old man’s farmhouse, ready to tell him the job was done and also get paid.
