"Four hundred thirty-five... Four hundred thirty-six... Four hundred thirty-seven..." Fudotatakai counted to himself in thought as he bench pressed a tree, lifting it up off of his chest with each count. He had worked up a bit of a sweat, and felt a distinct soreness in his arms... But it was downright boring. He threw the plant upward, sending it crashing to the ground before sitting up, stretching out his biceps a little. He had lately gotten into the habit of working out his physical strength with simple exercises, but it just wasn't enjoyable any more. Not only did the biggest tree in the area offer little challenge, but it took almost ten minutes of lifting before he even felt their effect. He wanted something new that would really push his body to its limit... But had no idea where to start.
Fudo thought back on the different foes he'd fought in the past. Most of them were renown martial arts teachers who made a living by training younger students. The pupils were too weak to have a good fight with, so Fudo went after their sensei and demanded a battle. Despite their low amount of Ki energy, they each had surprisingly strong muscles, which made him curious. As he knelt down to get a drink of fresh water from a pond, he wondered what kind of training those men went through in order to build up their bodies. Besides having exercise partners, there was only one thing Fudo could think of: proper training equipment. If he could get his hands on some equipment, he was sure that his physical strength would see a vast improvement in a short period of time. The man stood up and used his Close-In technique to launch his footsteps into large bounds, propelling him between trees as he made his way into town.
By this time, people in nearby cities were always on the alert for the Demon of Battle to show up, and when he did, they nervously ran indoors and quaked in fear as he calmly walked by. He didn't pay any mind to it, but a police officer did show up to confront him. "N-Now hold it, Mr.! I'm afraid I'm gonna have to stop you! You're up to something, no doubt!" the officer said. Fudo only exhaled and pulled out the small pouch that held his money. "I wish to make a purchase. Show me to the local martial arts school." Fudo said. The policeman really didn't feel like going against Fudo's wishes, so he nodded. "A-Alright, as long as you don't cause any trouble... This way." he said, beckoning for Fudo to follow.
Fudo remained silent as he walked behind the officer, not even glancing down at him while the two strolled down the street. After a few minutes of awkward silence (at least to the officer. Fudo didn't mind the lack of speaking), the police officer looked up and took a deep breath. "Can I ask... Why you go around beating up on people all the time?" the man said with a hint of freight. He hesitated to ask, but he wanted to know what was going on in Fudo's head each time he showed up for a fight. "... I fight so that I may become stronger." Fudo answered. It was the same answer he gave most people who asked that question, and it was the only answer he really had. "But why? Are you becoming stronger for something, or someone?" the officer then asked, starting to get a little more comfortable now that Fudo was calm. "I become strong so that I may fight better opponents." Fudo said bluntly, not really providing the police officer with much of an answer. "Oh, I see... But do you have to do it in such a mean way? These people around here... They think you're evil." the officer explained. Fudo grimaced, not much liking the thought of being viewed as a villain. Of course, it had little to no effect on him, so he didn't really care. "I don't fight for evil, and I don't fight for good. I just fight." he said before looking back down at his guide. "Is that a problem?" he asked in an impatient tone. The officer just shook his head somewhat frantically. "N-No! No problem. Just... Try to be a little more kind... Please?" he asked.
Fudotatakai blinked, not used to the feeling of having someone ask politely for something from him. It had been ages since he knew anyone he could consider a 'friend', and everyone else he knew back during his old life treated him like dirt. He tried his best to respect others, but receiving undue respect from an officer from the law was... Refreshing. "... We'll see." he said plainly. The officer sighed quietly and continued walking, eventually arriving at the local school of martial arts.
The facility itself was more modern than the average dojo, and had a small workout room that featured many pieces of equipment for rental. Of course, the officials inside shivered when they saw Fudotatakai enter, but the presence of a police officer calmed them down a little. "Erm, good afternoon, gentlemen!" the officer said, tipping his hat in greeting. "This man here would like to make a purchase. I escorted here so that he doesn't cause any trouble." he explained, looking up at Fudo with a forced smile. Fudo only nodded slowly. The man behind the counter glanced at the officer before wearing a strained smiled himself, nodding in response. "Er, yes! Well, I assure you that there are many fine pieces of training equipment here for sale, and I'm sure there's something to fit your needs! Would you like anything in particular?" the young man asked. Fudo's brows furrowed as he thought to himself, not sure what it was that he actually wanted. "... Something heavy. I want to increase my physical strength." he explained.
The assistant nodded, gesturing hesitantly over to the items for sale. "Ah, well. If you look over here, you'll see that we have a fine collection of heavy weights that you can work out with! Try a few if you'd like... Just be careful." he said with a nervous grin. Fudo nodded and moved over to examine the weights, kneeling down and inspecting each one. He happened upon the largest and heaviest set, grabbing it with one hand in order to test it out. He lifted it with ease, blinking over at the assistant. "Heavier." he said promptly, dropping the weight back to the ground with a loud bang. The assistant flinched and nodded. "Yes! Um, well... That's the, uh... Heaviest one we have..." he admitted fearfully. Fudo's face scrunched in disdain as he looked over the rest of the merchandise. "Pathetic." he spat, quiet appalled that they didn't carry any items that he could use. The assistant seemed to panic slightly before coming up with an idea. "W-Well sir, there is something." he said, holding up his hand as a gesture for Fudo to stay where he was.
The assistant soon returned dragging a cart with the help of three other men, who all struggled to pull the item into view. "Here, sir... These are prototype training equipment that aren't for sale yet, but if you have enough cash to compensate for it, I'm sure we can-" Fudo interrupted the man by dropping his bag of Zeni on the counter, a cloth sack that obviously held a hefty sum of coin. "... That'll do just fine, sir! The gear's all yours!" the assistant proclaimed, eager to make such a profitable sale. Fudo let the man take the money away before opening up the cart. Inside was a set of four metal cuffs, as well as a sort of vest. He took hold of one of the cuffs... And blinked. Its weight was extremely surprising, and after fastening it to his wrist, he could tell just how effective it would be in training. He attached one other cuff to his opposite wrist, then the remaining two to his ankles. Finally, he put on the vest, which was inlaid with a dense metal plating. The feeling was great, and he already found it somewhat difficult to stand. "Thank you." he said suddenly before walking out casually, not waiting around for anything else. The officer watched carefully as the Demon of Battle left, sighing in relief that nothing went wrong.
